UC-CNA Bargaining Update August 19-21

UC-CNA Bargaining Update August 19-21

UC met with the California Nurses Association for reopener negotiations on August 19-21 in Irvine.

At this meeting, the University presented CNA with a proposal on benefits in which UC expressed its goal of maintaining the current benefits programs.  UC also committed to bargain with CNA if it changed its process for calculating employee medical premiums.

A University representative and a representative from the Regents’ consulting actuary provided the Union with an overview of the UC Retirement System plans, including a detailed presentation on the Regents’ consideration of adopting a funding policy for UCRP, and the Regents’ commitment that when employee contributions are restarted, the University will at least match the required employee contribution to the UC Retirement Plan. In addition, information was distributed on a proposal to change the default fund of the UCRS Retirement Savings Program plans.

The University and CNA also had extensive discussions about staffing issues, particularly floating between units.

In response to CNA’s request for extensive information about preceptor pay, the University informed the Union that the work required to provide a response would require a fee; however, UC committed to negotiating with CNA over a means of reimbursing the University for its efforts.  In addition, the University provided CNA with its philosophy about precepting and nurses’ professional responsibilities at teaching hospitals, which can be found online here.

UC and CNA continue negotiations August 27-29 in San Diego.
