Opening UC/CNA Bargaining Update - August 4, 2009

Opening UC/CNA Bargaining Update - August 4, 2009

UC medical and student health centers offer some of the best patient care in the country, and attracting, retaining and appropriately compensating quality personnel remains one of our top priorities.  To this end, UC offers some of the most generous compensation and benefits packages available in today’s healthcare market.

This month, the University is beginning limited-subject (“reopener”) contract negotiations with the California Nurses Association, focused on the topics of wages, staffing, health and welfare benefits, and retirement benefits.

We want to be sure UC nurses receive accurate and timely information about the contract negotiations and we will be providing informational updates immediately following each bargaining session and other information to be sure nurses are kept informed throughout this entire process.

Nurses are encouraged to visit www.UCNurses.com frequently and to also ask questions of your supervisor or local human resources office throughout the negotiation process. Nurses may also speak with their union about these issues.

There will be approximately four weeks of bargaining. If UC and CNA are unable to reach a conclusion after the planned sessions, they will proceed to fact-finding.  The University hopes that a mutually beneficial agreement can be reached in a timely fashion.

UC’s key goals for these negotiations include:

-- Preserve UC’s ability to provide excellent, cost effective health care services to communities throughout California

-- Maintain UC’s ability to offer attractive total compensation packages in order to retain and attract talented, well-qualified nurses and in recognition of the vital role nurses play at UC

-- Avoid furloughs and layoffs for nurses to the extent possible by making full use of all other available cost-saving measures

-- Safeguard retirement benefits

-- Provide high-quality, affordable health benefits

-- Reach agreement with CNA regarding staffing issues

-- Conclude negotiations swiftly through efficient, respectful, good faith negotiations
