UC-CNA Bargaining Update - October 9, 2009

UC-CNA Bargaining Update - October 9, 2009

The University and CNA concluded discussions with the fact-finder on October 9th and determined that there is still potential to collaboratively reach an agreement on a contract for the University’s registered nurses.

The two parties will resume settlement efforts through mediation, meeting on November 4th and, if necessary, November 6th to continue discussions and to move forward with the fact-finding process.

For a more detailed overview of the fact-finding process, please click here.

The key areas that the University and CNA will continue to discuss during mediation include benefits, staffing, wages and contract duration.

UC remains committed to providing our registered nurses with attractive compensation packages that are on par with the marketplace.

CNA seeks an immediate 8 percent salary increase at a time when most UC employees – including senior medical center managers – have accepted temporary furloughs and pay cuts of up to 10 percent.

The Alternative Plan exempts medical center nurses from the furlough program because of the important role that they play in patient care, but it would be both unnecessary and unfair to provide raises to this one group at a time when others are making a significant financial sacrifice and at a time when the University is having no trouble attracting and retaining qualified and experienced RNs. The University is encouraged by the return to mediation and is optimistic that we can reach an agreement with CNA soon.
